Number and operations.
Extend previous knowledge of sets and subsets using a visual representation to describe relationships between sets of rational numbers.
Describe the Number
Group: Whole Class
Materials: Describe the Number phrase and number cards
Issue a Describe the Number phrase card to each student. Display a Describe the Number number card on the document camera one at a time. When a number card is displayed, students raise their cards to show the sets of numbers to which each number belongs. The teacher asks volunteers to explain why the number was classified into a particular group.
Have students name numbers that fit each description.
A rational number that is not an integer. (Any fraction or decimal.)
An integer that is not a whole number. (Any opposite value of a whole number that is
negative.)
A square root that is a whole number or a natural number. (Any rational square root.)
A whole number that is not a natural number. (0)
Incorporation Tip: This activity can assess students’ understanding of different sets of numbers and their classifications. It encourages active participation and critical thinking as students justify their reasoning for classifying numbers. Additionally, it reviews key concepts related to number sets, helping students solidify their knowledge through practice and peer discussion.
