Number and operations.
Compose and decompose numbers up to 100,000 as a sum of so many ten thousands, so many thousands, so many hundreds, so many tens, and so many ones using objects, pictorial models, and numbers, including expanded notation as appropriate.
Match Makers
Group: Three
Materials: Match Makers Expanded Number cards, Number cards, Word Form cards
Give each group a cut-out set of the Match Makers Expanded Number cards, Number cards, and the Word Form cards. Place the number cards in a face-down stack. Spread the numbers’ name cards and the expanded number cards in separate rows and columns. Then, have students take turns selecting a number card from the face-down stack. One student finds the matching word card, and another student finds the matching expanded number card. Instruct students to continue until all cards have been matched.
Incorporation Tip: This activity reinforces students’ understanding of place value by encouraging them to explain their reasoning as they match the cards. This will help them solidify their comprehension of how numbers can be represented in different forms, which is essential for developing a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. Additionally, consider using this activity as a warm-up exercise to engage students and prepare them for more complex place-value tasks.
