Algebra 1: (TEK: A.2B)
Linear functions, equations, and inequalities. Write linear equations in two variables in various forms, including y = mx + b, Ax + By = C, and y – y1 = m(x – x1), given one point and the slope and given two points.
Activity 55
Write an Equation that Fits Each Description
Group: Pairs
Materials: Write an Equation that Fits Each Description cards, Sets A and B, Graphing Calculator, paper and pencil
Issue a graphing calculator to each student. Give each pair a set of the Write an Equation that Fits Each Description cards. Instruct students to arrange the Set A cards in equal rows and columns. Have them place the Set B cards face down in a stack. Partners take turns displaying a card. Both students write the equation that fits the description on the displayed card. When partners complete the task, instruct them to find the matching equation in the array and place the card from Set A on top of the corresponding equation card. Let students know that they can ask for assistance from another pair or from the teacher if necessary. Instruct students to continue until all cards have been matched. Ask pairs to reveal their matches in a class discussion. Have volunteers model the examples on the board.
Incorporation Tip: This activity can reinforce students’ understanding of writing and matching equations with given descriptions. It promotes collaborative learning as students work together to solve problems and validate each other’s work. Graphing calculators allow students to explore the equations visually, making connections between the algebraic expressions and their graphical representations. Extended class discussion can further clarify misunderstandings and gain confidence in their equation-writing skills.
