Algebraic reasoning.
Identify prime and composite numbers.
Sticky Primes
Group: Three
Materials: self-stick notes, paper and pencil
Distribute one self-stick note to each student. Tell students to write a number from 2 to 100 on their self-stick notes. Write the words PRIME and COMPOSITE as headings on the board. Have students write the headings on their paper. Call on students to go to the board in small groups to place their self-stick note numbers under the appropriate heading. When all self-stick notes have been placed on the board, have students look for numbers that have been placed under the wrong heading. After corrections, have students copy the numbers on their papers.
Incorporation Tip: This activity can be used as a review before a quiz or test on prime and composite numbers. It encourages active participation and peer learning as students work together to classify numbers correctly. Additionally, consider using this activity to spark a discussion about the characteristics of prime and composite numbers, reinforcing students’ understanding of factors and multiples. This hands-on approach makes the concept more memorable and helps identify students’ misconceptions.
